Job Posting - COPPUL Executive Director

The Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries (COPPUL) is a consortium of 22 university libraries in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Members cooperate and collaborate to enhance information services through resource sharing, collective purchasing, document delivery, preservation programs, and other similar activities.

COPPUL is seeking an Executive Director. This position will be offered for an initial three- year term as a secondment opportunity or as a contract starting August 2016.

The Executive Director, as the principal representative of the organization, works under the direction of the Board to achieve the vision and goals of COPPUL, including the development of strategies, management of actions, and assessment of results. This position is also responsible for budget management and staff supervision.

Key Areas of Responsibility include:

  • working effectively with the Board and membership to develop and implement organizational plans, policies, and strategies

  • monitoring the COPPUL Strategic Directions Framework, overseeing completion of the organization’s strategic goals and contributing to the plan renewal

  • representing COPPUL interests and initiatives with other regional and national consortia, associations and organizations

  • organizing membership meetings and workshops

  •   facilitating the work of COPPUL committees and task groups

  •   seeking out and recommending new collaborative opportunities to the Board

  •   overseeing the negotiation of consortium pricing with vendors and publishers of electronic databases and full-text products

  •   preparation of annual budgets and financial management of all aspects of the operation including invoicing and payments

  •   fulfilling incorporation and membership responsibilities

  •   working in close cooperation with the Board, keeping the Chair informed of developments as they occur

  •   recommending strategic initiatives to support the future success of COPPUL

  •   maintaining effective relationships and communicating information and news to members

  •  promoting COPPUL, and presenting a positive image to other library consortia and professional organizations
  •   managing the overall operation of COPPUL

  •   serving as Secretary/Treasurer for the Board

  •   maintaining the COPPUL website

  •   supervising the work of the COPPUL staff

    Qualifications include:

  •   MLIS (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited institution

  •   Minimum of five (5) years relevant experience, with progressive levels of responsibility, preferably in an academic library

  • Preference for candidates who have taken courses in association management and particularly those who have completed or are enrolled in the program for Certified Association Executives or those offered through the Canadian Society for Association Executives or equivalent

  •   Excellent organizational skills

  •   Strong work ethic

  •   Highly effective communication skills

  •   Ability to collaborate, enable, and lead through influence and persuasion

  •   Confidence to work independently with a minimum of supervision

  •   Familiarity with licensing, digital preservation initiatives, and shared print archiving strategies in academic and research libraries

  •   Demonstrated success in project or program leadership and management

  •   Strong financial analysis and planning skills

  •   Knowledge of information technology sufficient to coordinate projects effectively and to contribute to program and project results

  •   Ability to negotiate positive agreement among members, with vendors, and partners while building successful, long term relationships

    The location and remuneration for the position will be negotiated; the successful candidate must reside within the COPPUL region.
