COPPUL partners with CAUL-CBUA for preservation services

June 24, 2019

VANCOUVER June 24, 2018 - COPPUL is pleased to announce that Archivematica-as-a-Service is now being offered to members of the Council of Atlantic University Libraries - Conseil des bibliothèques universitaires de l’Atlantique (CAUL-CBUA). This innovative agreement enables CAUL-CBUA members to access a world-class digital preservation platform without having to manage any infrastructure locally.

COPPUL Executive Director Kristina McDavid remarked, “This is another example of the importance of collaboration between regional library consortia in Canada, where community-driven services developed in one region can provide substantial benefits right across the country. We’re proud to be partnering with CAUL-CBUA on this initiative.”

Archivematica is an open-source digital preservation system designed for standards-based, long-term access to digital material. It is a toolkit designed for implementing strategies that deal with technology obsolescence and incompatibility to ensure that digital objects remain secure, accessible and usable into the future.

COPPUL offers Archivematica-as-a-Service for libraries and archives wishing to preserve digital holdings without installing and locally managing Archivematica instances. The service is a joint effort of COPPUL, Artefactual Systems Inc. (Archivematica's lead developers) and the University of British Columbia (UBC) through their EduCloud Server Service.

Justin Simpson, Managing Director of Artefactual, said "This service is an ideal use of the free and open-source Archivematica platform. We are proud to have helped COPPUL launch this ground-breaking service, and we are very pleased to see the offering extended to CAUL-CBUA."

Cynthia Holt, Executive Director of CAUL-CBUA, stated, “COPPUL and CAUL-CBUA members share a deep commitment to preserving their digital materials. With this agreement, we’ve given them access to an affordable and sustainable tool to help make that happen.”
