Archivematica as-a-Service

Archivematica is an open-source digital preservation system designed to maintain standards-based, long-term access to collections of digital objects. COPPUL offers Archivematica-as-a-Service for  COPPUL members and other partners wishing to preserve digital holdings without installing and locally managing Archivematica instances.

Shared service model

The service is a joint effort of COPPUL, Artefactual Systems Inc. (Archivematica's lead developers) and University of British Columbia (UBC) through their EduCloud Server Service. COPPUL promotes the service, signs up new institutions and provided seed funding for the one-time set-up costs; Artefactual Systems provides installation, ongoing technical support and user training; and UBC provides a fee-based server hosting and digital object storage and back-up service.

COPPUL Member Benefits

Participating institutions derive substantial benefits from the service, including the ability to use an existing digital preservation platform and community rather than developing them separately from scratch, training and technical support services from experienced Archivematica developers and digital preservation specialists, and centralized system administration at a much lower cost than paying for a local system administrator.

Hosting and digital object storage and back-up are provided through UBC's EduCloud Server Service, a community cloud-based service for the public Higher Education community of British Columbia. This cloud computing service meets British Columbia provincial privacy requirements under the FIPPA legislation and offers the benefits of a Virtual Server Service such as server consolidation, resource pooling, high availability of the service, and regular backups.

Tiered service levels

Three different service levels are available to member institutions. All service levels include access to an Archivematica installation on a dedicated virtual machine. Archivematica provides a web-based dashboard to manage ingest, preservation planning, Archival Information Packaging and storage management based on the Open Archival Information Systems (OAIS) reference model

Bronze level ($5,200):

  • Archivematica for digital preservation
  • 2 CPUs, 16 GB RAM
  • 400 GB disk space for processing and storage

Silver level ($6,900):

  • Archivematica for digital preservation
  • 4 CPUs, 32 GB RAM,
  • 1 TB disk space for processing and storage

Gold level ($11,450):

  • Archivematica for digital preservation + AtoM for online public access to preserved content
  • 8 CPUs, 48 GB RAM,
  • 2 TB disk space for processing and storage

Additional storage at all levels is provided at a cost of $500 per TB.

DSpace+ integration is available for gold or silver service levels only. Costs are $4,000 for the first year and $2,000 for subsequent years, in addition to the costs for Archivematica-as-a-service.

An annual subscription to Archivematica-as-a-Service includes one processing pipeline. Additional pipelines may be added for $5,200 per pipeline per year, and each additional pipeline comes with 1 TB of storage. The Pipelines+ service is available for gold or silver service levels only.
